The Onion Skin Egg Chalkware Rabbit
Catalog #R227 — A German Heritage Primitive
Measuring approximately 5 inches tall, this hand-crafted chalkware rabbit captures the essence of a true antique. Cast from a vintage chocolate mold, its charming silhouette is reminiscent of the rabbits seen on early German Easter postcards.
The rabbit carries a cone filled with "onion skin eggs," with one additional egg resting at its feet. The art of making onion skin eggs is a traditional German technique where eggs are dyed using the outer skins of onions to achieve a rich, earthy marbleized effect.
To honor this tradition, I hand-mix my own colors to replicate those exact historic shades. This piece, with its warm palette and meticulous antiquing process, is designed to display beautifully alongside redware and other early American folk art.
