Catalog #R252 captures a tender spring scene: a mother rabbit gently pushing her baby in a vintage-style carriage. Measuring approximately 5 1/2" x 4", the figure is finished as a complete vignette, with leaves and small meadow flowers painted across the base.
This piece is cast from a rare and highly detailed German cast barley sugar mold—a Zuckerhasenform—rather than a chocolate mold. These molds are known for their intricate detail, and because they are cast, they can be challenging to pour in chalkware. The result is a form with especially crisp detail in the carriage, basket texture, and trim.
The base edge is finished with a trailing vine of pink rosebuds, and the carriage is draped with a homespun blanket in warm red and mustard tones, painted with a folk art floral vine. The mother rabbit wears an apron and a simple scarf at her neck, completing the old-world character of the design.
R252 is a natural focal point for an Easter or spring display—especially alongside baskets, early wood, pantry boxes, antique textiles, or ironstone. It also displays beautifully on a nursery shelf as a keepsake-style piece that still feels rooted in early folk art tradition.
