The Artistry

Catalog #R401 is a 7-inch rooster hand-cast in chalkware from a rare antique German chocolate mold, then finished to complement early yelloware collections. The form has strong, crisp modeling—featherwork, stance, and silhouette that read beautifully under low, warm light.

The surface is built in layers: a warm yelloware finish as the ground, followed by a deep, mottled Rockingham glaze effect that evokes the syrupy browns associated with 19th-century pottery traditions. The final antiquing is intentionally subdued so the highlights remain honeyed while the darker tones settle into the recesses of the mold.

Each rooster is finished by hand in the studio and signed on the bottom: Bittersweet House Folk Art, Kathryn Campbell.

Styling Ideas

R401 displays best as a single focal piece—on a mantel, a cupboard shelf, or a table vignette where the profile and glaze can catch the light. The warm yelloware ground pairs naturally with bowls, pitchers, and mixing bowls, while the Rockingham tones echo dark glazes and early browns.

For a quieter, collected look, place it with one or two supporting objects rather than a busy grouping—early wood, redware, or ironstone will keep the palette grounded and let the finish do the talking.
