The Artistry

Standing 5.5 inches tall, the S470 Christmas Chalkware Santa is cast from a rare antique chocolate mold that captures the "Rupert" style—a nod to Knecht Ruprecht, the traditional companion of Saint Nicholas in Northern Germany. Finished in a deep, saturated evergreen, this Santa exudes a quiet, forest-born dignity that serves as a rich backdrop for its colorful Pennsylvania Dutch ornamentation.

The Design

The green coat is transformed into a vibrant folk-art tapestry through the use of traditional Fraktur motifs. Hand-painted with meticulous care, the design features the Distelfink—the "good luck" goldfinch—nested among symmetrical tulip blooms and trailing botanical vines. The contrast of primary reds and yellows against the forest green background echoes the rhythmic, joyful patterns found in 18th-century hand-drawn manuscripts.

Of Special Note:
The "Rupert" form is prized for its classic Belsnickle silhouette and historical weight. To give the piece an authentic winter finish, Diamond Frost glass glitter has been applied to the beard and the snowy base, providing a crystalline shimmer that mimics the first frost of the Black Forest. Each piece is individually cast in chalkware using an antique chocolate mold, hand-painted, signed, numbered, and dated by Kathryn Campbell.
