’Twas the night before Christmas. The S697 Starry Night Chalkware Santa is a rare and whimsical masterwork cast from an antique rocking mold. Santa bends toward a brick chimney with lantern in hand, captured mid-moment in the familiar hush of Christmas Eve—an evocative scene made even more special by the crescent-shaped rocker base that gently rocks in the hand.
The rocker is hand-painted in a deep Prussian blue with a subtle greenward cast, chosen for its velvety, night-sky depth. Across the base, a small snowy village glows beneath golden stars and a shooting star, while the curved form creates a continuous celestial narrative from one end to the other. Bright holiday reds and warm chimney tones stand out crisply against the midnight ground, giving the piece its dramatic, collector-level contrast.
The exacting craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure a treasure that reflects our historic past and will last for generations to come. Every figure is hand-signed, numbered, and dated on the bottom: Bittersweet House Folk Art, Kathryn Campbell.
