Dashing through the snow. The S826 Chalkware Gnome Santas capture a moment of pure holiday motion—three Santa gnomes, accompanied by a small cherub, whizzing downhill on a sled. Hand-cast from a rare and exceptionally intricate German antique chocolate mold, this lively figural scene represents years of refinement and color study in our studio.
Inspired by the muted, time-worn pigments of antique pantry and Shaker boxes, the palette features a softly aged dusky rose, complemented by hand-mixed chrome green and peacock blue. Each hue was blended to echo 19th-century American folk art traditions, with mustard-yellow leggings and layered details adding warmth and contrast.
The sled itself features a hand-painted snowflake runner motif, and the entire piece is finished with a gentle, antiqued patina. Due to the complexity of the mold and the multi-layered painting process, this design remains one of the most labor-intensive and limited Chalkware Santas produced at Bittersweet House.
Bittersweet House Folk Art captures the character and warmth of traditional chalkware. Each piece is individually hand-cast from an antique mold and meticulously hand-painted to order.
The exacting craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure a treasure that reflects our historic past and will last for generations. Every figure is hand-signed, numbered, and dated on the bottom: Bittersweet House Folk Art, Kathryn Campbell.
