Standing approximately 4 1/4 inches tall, the S457 is cast from a rare antique tin German chocolate mold. This piece is a hallmark of Early American Folk Art, designed to harmonize with the warm tones of redware and salt-glaze pottery. Finished in a soft honey-brown patina, this Belsnickle captures the quiet, earthen beauty of a 19th-century New England Christmas.
The coat is meticulously hand-painted with traditional feather tree sprigs and vibrant holly berries, a pattern inspired by the earliest artificial Christmas trees brought to America by German settlers. The piece is finished with a touch of Diamond Frost glass glitter on the beard and snowy base, and features a classic green bottle-brush tree accessory. The result is a weathered, "found" appearance that suggests a century of holiday history.
Of Special Note:
This Santa was created during a period when Bittersweet House was rooted in the historic landscapes of Massachusetts, deeply influenced by the antique surroundings of a colonial-era farmhouse. Each piece is individually cast in chalkware, hand-painted, signed, numbered, and dated by Kathryn Campbell.
